Panthers record first NCAA Women's Tournament victory

Mar 19, 2007 - 6:14 AM PITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- Marcedes Walker's scored 20 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to propel ninth-seeded Pittsburgh a 71-61 triumph over No. 8 James Madison in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament's Dayton Region.

The Panthers (24-8) got off to a terrific start by shooting 52 percent (13-of-25) from the floor in the first half en route to their first-ever tournament victory. They face top seed Tennessee on Tuesday.

Walker made 8-of-10 shots, Shavonte Zellous scored 17 points and Jania Sims added 11 to help Pittsburgh improve to 11-2 at home this season.

James Madison had an edge in several statistical categories, including points-in-the-paint (34-28), second-half points (18-11) and points off turnovers (15-5).

However, the Dukes were limited to 34 percent shooting (23-of-68), while the Panthers made 21-of-27 free throws.

Tamera Young scored 16 points and Shirley Young had 12 for James Madison (27-7), which made its first tournament appearance since 1996.
