Lady Bears take down West Virginia

Jan 9, 2014 - 4:23 AM Morgantown, WV (SportsNetwork.com) - Odyssey Sims poured in a game-high 48 points while adding 10 rebounds and seven assists to lead the seventh-ranked Baylor Lady Bears to a 78-62 victory over the West Virginia Mountaineers at WVU Coliseum.

Nina Davis scored 12 points and Makenzie Robertson contributed eight points and 10 rebounds for Baylor (13-1, 3-0 Big 12), which has won six straight.

Asya Bussie totaled 17 points with seven rebounds and Bria Holmes added 15 points and six rebounds for West Virginia (13-2, 2-1), which saw its 13-game winning streak snapped. Taylor Palmer finished with 12 points for the hosts.

Sims tallied 13 points in the midst of a 23-8 tear the Lady Bears went on just over nine minutes into the game. Baylor then traded baskets with the Mountaineers for the remainder of the first half to lead 40-25 at the break.

In the first 20 minutes, the Lady Bears shot 15-for-33 (45.5 percent) from the field, while West Virginia went 8-for-33 (24.2 percent). Baylor also outrebounded the Mountaineers by a 31-13 margin in the first half.

The Mountaineers scored the first five points of the second half and managed to come within eight points, 52-44, with 12:30 remaining. However, the Lady Bears refused to allow them to gain any more ground.

Baylor netted seven straight points, only to be answered by a 6-0 run by West Virginia. Holmes made a layup to cut the deficit to 59-50 with 9:18 remaining, but West Virginia failed to make a field goal over the next five minutes.

The Lady Bears closed out the remaining nine minutes with a 19-12 run as they cruised to the finish.
