Motley leads Miami over No. 6 UNC

Feb 2, 2014 - 10:33 PM Chapel Hill, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Adrienne Motley netted a career-high 27 points to lead the Miami Hurricanes to an 83-80 upset over No. 6 North Carolina on Sunday.

Motley shot 10-of-14 from the floor and made three straight jumpers during a crucial stretch late in the contest, the last of which gave Miami (12-10, 4-5 ACC) a 73-71 lead that it never surrendered.

Keyona Hayes added 14 points off the bench and Caprice Dennis had 10 in the triumph.

Xylina McDaniel and Diamond DeShields notched 18 points apiece in UNC's (17-5, 5-3) second straight setback on the heels of five straight wins. Allisha Gray and Danielle Butts chipped in 14 and 13 points, respectively. The Tar Heels shot just 4-of-19 from the arc.

Miami trailed early on but started thinking upset when Motley's jumper at 13:21 sparked a 22-4 surge over the next 6 1/2 minutes. Six different Hurricanes scored during the run, and the visitors led 38-19.

UNC scored the final 10 points of the first half and trailed just 42-36 at intermission.

The Tar Heels went in front and held multiple one-point leads early in the second half before Miami regrouped. Hayes followed Motley's jumpers late with one of her own, and Krystal Saunders made 4-of-4 from the line in the final minute to secure it.
