Temple, Moore lead Missouri past Texas Tech
Oct 8, 2006 - 2:31 AM LUBBOCK, Texas (Ticker) -- Missouri spoiled more than just homecoming for Texas Tech.Tony Temple scored two rushing touchdowns and William Moore was huge on defense as the 23rd-ranked Tigers posted a 38-21 Big 12 Conference victory over the Red Riders, who had their 11-game home winning streak stopped.
Missouri (6-0, 2-0 Big 12 North) has won seven consecutive games for the first time since 1968. It entered having the only program in the country with both its offense and defense to rank in the top 10.
The Tigers built a commanding lead, 24-0, in the second quarter when Xzavie Jackson and Moore both returned interceptions for touchdowns on back-to-back possessions, the latter with 11:20 remaining. A safety, Moore finished seven tackles and a fumble recovery.
"I've never seen back-to-back plays that were interception returns for touchdowns," Missouri coach Gary Pinkel said.
"The kid (Moore) made a good play on the ball," Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell said. "I probably shouldn't have thrown it in there, it happens."
Texas Tech (4-2, 1-1 South) cut the deficit to 24-21 in the third quarter but it would get no closer. Daniel Chase found Chase Coffman on six-yard TD pass and Temple scored on an eight-yard scamper to begin the fourth quarter to create a 17-point edge.
"I'm just very happy with our players for responding," Pinkel said. "I think on every turnover we had, we responded with points, which was hugely important."
Chase completed 15-of-22 passes for 173 yards and Will Franklin caught five passes for 90 yards for Missouri, which forced five turnovers and allowed just 72 yards on the ground.
Harrell went 39-of-55 for 341 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions for the Red Riders, who fell to 3-23 when trailing after halftime under coach Mike Leach.
"I just didn't come out and play well," Harrell said. "I threw two picks and it cost us. I turned the ball over too much and wasn't clear-headed."
No one has shouted yet.
