Trojans hold on to slip past Wildcats

Oct 12, 2014 - 6:54 AM Tucson, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Javorius Allen rushed for a career-high 206 yards with three touchdowns and the USC Trojans held off a furious fourth- quarter comeback to upset the 10th-ranked Arizona, 28-26, on Saturday.

The Trojans led by 15 entering the fourth and Jared Baker scored a pair of touchdowns in the final quarter to cut the deficit to two. Arizona was unsuccesful on its two-point conversion attempt, but the hosts recovered a perfect onside kick with just over a minute to play.

Anu Solomon, who threw for 395 yards and one touchdown, drove the Wildcats to the USC 22 after successive completions to David Richards. Baker rushed for three yards to move the ball a little closer and set up a game-winning field goal attempt. Casey Skowron split the uprights on his 36-yard try, but the Trojans called their final timeout to ice him.

And it worked.

Skowron thought about it and his second try went wide right as USC (4-2, 3-1 Pac-12) held on for the win.

Cody Kessler tossed for 185 yards with a touchdown and an interception, while Nelson Agholor caught seven passes for 81 yards and a touchdown in the win.

Baker scored three total touchdowns -- two on the ground and one receiving -- for the Wildcats (5-1, 2-1), who looked to win their first six games since starting 7-0 in 1993.

Skowron missed one of his three field goals in the game on Arizona's first drive of the game. He later added a 32-yarder to make it a 3-0 game.

Allen answered on the Trojans' next touch by rushing for a 34-yard score.

Skowron closed scoring in the first quarter with a 25-yard field goal.

Early in the second, Allen took a handoff 48 yards on the third play of the drive to give USC a 14-6 lead.

The visitors opened the third quarter with the ball and drove 75 yards in 11 plays with Agholor capping the series with a 21-yard TD reception.

Justin Davis' fumble later in the third set up Baker's first touchdown of the night, a 6-yard run which cut the deficit to 21-13. USC countered that with a 1-yard scoring run from Allen for a 28-13 lead.

That would be all the scoring from USC and Solomon got Arizona back into the contest by connecting with Baker for a 41-yard TD that made it a 28-20 game.

The Wildcats got the ball back with just under 3 1/2 minutes left in the game. Cayleb Jones caught four of his seven receptions to account for 39 yards, then Baker cut the deficit to two with a 1-yard touchdown.
