Bercovici, No. 17 ASU down No. 23 Stanford

Oct 19, 2014 - 7:23 AM Tempe, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Mike Bercovici was 23-of-33 for 245 yards and a touchdown as No. 17 Arizona State defeated No. 23 Stanford 26-10 on Saturday night.

The Sun Devils opened the scoring with two touchdowns in the second quarter and were never seriously threatened thereafter as they snapped a four-game losing streak to the Cardinal.

D.J. Foster carried the ball 24 times for 59 yards and a touchdown and added seven receptions for 92 yards, while Jaelen Strong caught eight passes for 75 yards and a score for Arizona State (5-1, 3-1 Pac-12), which has won consecutive games since a 62-27 loss to UCLA.

Stanford beat Arizona State on back-to-back weeks to close the 2013 regular season, including a rout in the Pac-12 title game.

"This one meant a lot," ASU coach Todd Graham said. "For us to go out tonight and dominate a team that has dominated us, it was a great night to be a Sun Devil."

Kevin Hogan completed 19-of-39 passes for 212 yards for the Cardinal (4-3, 2-2), who have dropped two of their last three games. The normally stout Stanford rushing attack tallied just 76 yards on 22 totes.

"Bottom line we did not play well anywhere," Stanford head coach David Shaw said.

Ellis Jefferson hauled in a 20-yard pass and Strong picked up 15 on a 3rd- and-12 before Foster capped a 13-play, 81-yard drive with a 1-yard TD plunge to start the scoring midway through the second.

Ty Montgomery muffed a punt later in the frame and Damarious Randall made the recovery at the Stanford 12. Bercovici hit Strong for a 3-yard score four plays later for a 14-0 Arizona State advantage.

Stanford was shut out in the first half for the first time in 87 games.

Jordan Williamson finished off a 12-play, 65-yard sequence with a 40-yard field goal to open the second half for the Cardinal, but Zane Gonzalez split the uprights from 25 yards out on the Sun Devils' ensuing series for a 17-3 cushion.

Gonzalez added a 47-yard field goal early in the fourth to extend the lead to 20-3.

Hogan broke off a 31-yard run and Montgomery hauled in a 22-yard reception on consecutive plays before Patrick Skov plunged in from a yard out to cut the deficit to 20-10.

Gonzalez hit a 25-yard field goal with 4:07 left and then knocked through a 31-yarder after Ezekiel Bishop recovered a Christian McCaffery fumble on the ensuing kickoff.

Hogan overthrew Montgomery on a 4th-and-10 with 39 ticks left to seal the outcome.
