No Gurley, no problem as Georgia takes out Arkansas
Oct 19, 2014 - 5:33 AM Little Rock, AR (SportsNetwork.com) - Hutson Mason threw for 179 yards and two touchdowns on 10-of-17 efficiency while running for another score, and No. 10 Georgia got along quite well without Todd Gurley, posting a 45-32 decision over Arkansas on Saturday.Subbing for Gurley, who is suspended pending an investigation for receiving compensation for signed memorabilia, Nick Chubb raced to 202 yards and a pair of scores on 30 carries for the Bulldogs (6-1, 4-1 SEC), who racked up 38 first-half points and cruised to their fifth consecutive victory.
Chris Conley totaled 128 yards and one receiving TD on five receptions, and Michael Bennett added a touchdown catch for Georgia, which has a bye next week then takes on Florida in Jacksonville Nov. 1.
"We heard a lot of the naysayers say we wouldn't be anything without No. 3. We love Todd, but we feel like we are a team that has capable players to fill in for our starters when they go down," Conley said. "The guys took his loss to heart. We know how to win in this conference and we've got to continue to prove it."
Brandon Allen completed 28-of-45 passes for 296 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions for the Razorbacks (3-4, 0-4), who failed to capitalize on any momentum from last week's 14-13 loss to a top-10 Alabama program.
Alex Collins crossed the goal line twice despite gaining just 31 yards on 11 carries, with Keon Hatcher, Hunter Henry and Kendrick Edwards posting a TD catch apiece.
Collins' 1-yard run in the middle portion of the first quarter gave the hosts a lead, but the extra point was blocked and it proved to be an omen for the hosts, who surrendered 38 straight points from there.
Mason capped the following five-play series with a 1-yard dash of his own, and after a three-and-out by Arkansas, Marshall Morgan connected from 37 yards out and the Bulldogs led 10-6 early in the second.
Chubb then broke free for a 43-yard scamper up the middle to make it 17-6, and added a 3-yard TD rush with 5 1/2 minutes to play in the half. Mason and Bennett hooked up for a 7-yard strike one play after a Collins fumble was recovered by Georgia's Leonard Floyd.
Another fumble by the Razorbacks, this one by Allen, was converted into a 54- yard touchdown from Dominick Sanders and Georgia protected that 38-6 lead into halftime after Allen was picked off by Damian Swann in the end zone with seconds to go.
"You can't get down 38-6 or whatever we were down at any point in the game," Allen said. "Just totally uncharacteristic things from our offense, turnovers and just a lot of things that hurt us and it's tough to come back from stuff like that."
Chubb was held short on a 4th-and-5 to start the third quarter, and Hatcher hauled in an 8-yard pass from Allen on the hosts' next possession, but the conversion rush failed. The Razorbacks closed within 38-19 on their following touch, as Allen found Henry for a 4-yard strike.
Conley's 36-yard TD reception early in the fourth provided a 26-point margin for the Bulldogs, then Arkansas scored on back-to-back possessions, closing the gap to 45-32 with 5:05 to play on a 4-yard connection from Allen to Edwards and a 6-yard run to paydirt by Collins.
Georgia ran off the remaining clock by picking up four first downs.
