Hundley's 4 TDs vault UCLA over Washington

Nov 9, 2014 - 5:04 AM Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Brett Hundley threw a pair of touchdown passes and ran for two more scores in an outstanding performance that carried 18th-ranked UCLA to a 44-30 win over Washington in a Pac-12 clash.

Hundley was nearly flawless in leading the Bruins (8-2, 5-2 Pac-12) to their fourth straight victory following back-to-back midseason losses to Utah and Oregon. The junior quarterback completed 29-of-36 throws for 302 yards and delivered scoring strikes to Kenneth Walker and Mossi Johnson.

"He took command out there," said Bruins wide receiver Thomas Duarte. "He was rolling and he was the Brett everyone wants to see. He is the same guy day in and day out. Tonight it was on display."

Miles Jack added a 28-yard touchdown run, part of a 31-point first-half for UCLA, while Paul Perkins rushed for 98 yards on 19 carries in a game the Bruins never trailed.

Shaq Thompson had 100 yards on 16 rushes and John Ross broke off a 100-yard kick return touchdown in the loss, the fourth in sixth games for Washington (6-4, 2-4) following a 4-0 start.

Huskies quarterback Cyler Miles amassed 62 yards and a touchdown on the ground, but managed just 155 yards with one interception on 14-of-24 passing.

UCLA's potent offense could hardly be stopped over the initial two quarters, with the Bruins coming up with points on five of their seven first-half drives to build a comfortable 31-10 lead at the break.

After starting their second possession near midfield following a Washington three-and-out, the Bruins put together a 7-play, 55-yard sequence in which Hundley completed all three of his pass attempts and called his own number on a 4-yard keeper to open the scoring just over 5 1/2 minutes in.

The Bruins wasted little time extending the lead to 14-0, coming up with another quick defensive stop before Walker blew past the Husky secondary to haul in Hundley's on-target deep ball for a 57-yard touchdown on UCLA's next offensive snap.

Washington was able to get untracked on its next touch, as Miles hit on four straight throws to help his team march down to the UCLA 10 before the 13-play, 77-yard series stalled and the Huskies settled for Cameron Van Winkle's 20- yard field goal late in the first quarter.

The Huskies' defense then held, and six consecutive running plays, the last a 6-yard option by Miles, brought Washington within 14-10 with under a minute elapsed in the second quarter.

That was as close as the Huskies would come, as UCLA ripped off 17 straight points prior to the close of the period.

Hundley went 4-of-4 with his arm and delivered two big plays with his legs on the ensuing drive, a 10-play, 65-yard jaunt he capped with a 6-yard quarterback draw for his second TD run of the night.

"He played with great certainty," UCLA head coach Jim Mora said of Hundley. "He looked extremely poised in the pocket. He stepped up and threw the ball well with accuracy. He practiced that way all week and he performed that way tonight."

Two key third-down conversions got the Bruins back into the end zone just over four minutes later. Hundley found Johnson for a 10-yard gain on 3rd-and-8 and Jack broke off a 28-yard run, in which the two-way star shook off two tackles and tip-toed down the sideline for a highlight-reel touchdown to put UCLA up 28-10 with 5:23 to go in the half.

Hundley's 19-yard connection with Eldridge Massington -- also on third down -- near the end of the second quarter helped set up Ka'imi Fairbairn for a 30- yard field goal at the expiration of the half.

The Bruins were successful on 7-of-10 third-down opportunities over the first two quarters.

"The first half was extraordinarily disappointing," Washington head coach Chris Petersen remarked. "UCLA is good and they brought their 'A' game and we certainly did not play hard."

Washington closed the gap somewhat by embarking on a methodical 15-play, 57- yard drive led by the running of Thompson and Deontae Cooper. The Huskies got as far as the UCLA 12 before a third-down sack forced Van Winkle to come on for a 47-yard field goal to pull within 31-13.

The Bruins' offense picked up right where it left off, though, with Hundley going 4-for-4 on an 8-play trek he concluded with a 15-yard over-the-middle bullet to Johnson that increased UCLA's lead.

Washington immediately answered courtesy of Ross, who weaved through traffic after fielding the kickoff and turned on the jets when finding a seam for a 100-yard score that trimmed the deficit to 38-20 with 5:47 left in the third quarter.

The Huskies drew closer on their next possession, one-upping a 37-yard Fairbairn field goal with Dwayne Washington's 12-yard touchdown run that cut the lead to 41-27 with just over a minute elapsed in the fourth quarter.

As was the case throughout the night, however, Washington's defense couldn't stop UCLA when it needed to.

The Bruins chewed up over five minutes on the game clock with a 10-play possession Perkins kept alive with a 3-yard run on 3rd-and-2. Hundley found Devin Lucien for an apparent 17-yard touchdown on the following play, but Lucien was flagged for pushing off and UCLA ultimately brought on Fairbairn for a 46-yard field goal that put Washington again down by three scores.

Miles' 21-yard pass to Joshua Perkins on the subsequent series got the Huskies to the UCLA 21, but his next three throws were off the mark and Van Winkle again entered to make a 38-yarder to bring the Huskies within 44-30 with 5:08 remaining.

Washington got the ball back with 3:20 left to play, but Miles was intercepted by Fabian Moreau to end any comeback hopes.

Game Notes

The Bruins finished 8-of-14 on third downs for the game ... Hundley's first touchdown pass was the 69th of his career, moving him past Cade McNown for sole possession of first place on UCLA's all-time list ... Hundley's two rushing scores gave him 27 for his career, tying John Sciarra for the second- most by a Bruins quarterback ... Ross' return was the fifth touchdown of 80 or more yards by the Huskies this season, the most in school history ... UCLA has now won nine straight games away from the Rose Bowl and has taken 13 of the last 16 meetings with Washington.
