Kentucky, Clemson meet in Music City Bowl
Dec 29, 2006 - 4:26 PM Clemson (8-4) at Kentucky (7-5) Music City Bowl 1:00 pm ESTNASHVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Kentucky is happy just to be in a bowl game. Clemson likely thought its postseason contest would be a little bigger.
The Wildcats meet the Tigers on Friday in the Music City Bowl in a matchup of teams that seem to be heading in opposite directions.
Kentucky (7-5) is back in a bowl game for the first time since 1999 and finished the season with four wins in its final five games to likely save coach Rich Brooks' job.
The Wildcats were 9-25 in Brooks' first three seasons but got hot late after a 3-4 start, earning the coach a contract extension. Kentucky won four straight games, including a triumph over Georgia, before losing its season finale to Tennessee, 17-12.
Quarterback Andre' Woodson has been the key to Kentucky's success this season, throwing for 3,216 yards and 28 touchdowns with only seven interceptions. The Wildcats' leading rusher, Rafael Little, had midseason knee surgery but is expected to be at or near full strength.
While Kentucky is happy to be here, Clemson must be disappointed it is not in a bigger game, especially after a 7-1 start.
A dominant 31-7 victory over Georgia Tech seemed to have the Tigers pointed to a berth in the ACC title game, but they faltered, losing three of four to close the season.
The Tigers (8-4) rank fifth nationally in rushing yards per game (225.17). Sophomore James Davis, who leads the ACC in scoring (8.5), has gained 1,134 yards on the ground, while C.J. Spiller leads all ACC freshmen and is fourth nationally with 914 yards.
However, Clemson averaged more than 250 rushing yards in its first eight games but just 157 in its last four, and only four of the team's 31 rushing TDs came in the final four games.
While the Tigers will need to get their rushing attack back on track, they also will have to try and slow down Woodson without starting cornerback Duane Coleman, who will miss the game after being arrested for marijuana possession on December 20.
Clemson won the last meeting with Kentucky, 14-13, in the 1993 Peach Bowl. The Wildcats hold a 7-4 series lead over the Tigers.
