Baylor takes advantage of turnovers to beat Kansas State

Oct 1, 2006 - 4:46 AM WACO, Texas (Ticker) -- Shawn Bell threw for 282 yards and Baylor's defense caused five turnovers as the Bears posted a 17-3 victory over Kansas State in the Big 12 Conference opener for both schools.

Bell completed 25-of-46 passes with two touchdowns and an interception as the Bears (2-3, 1-0 Big 12 South) beat the Wildcats for the first time in five tries.

The 6-1 senior led Baylor to its first score when he threw a 75-yard touchdown to Trent Shelton with 2:35 left in the first quarter. It was the third TD of the season for Shelton, who caught three passes for 107 yards.

Dominique Zeigler led the Bears with eight catches, and his 11-yard touchdown reception gave Baylor a 14-3 cushion 4:47 into the third quarter.

Dylan Meier completed just 11-of-22 passes for 100 yards as the Wildcats (3-2, 0-1 North) lost their sixth straight conference opener.

Backup Josh Freeman started the second half and threw for 196 yards after replacing Meier. However, the freshman went just 11-of-33 with three interceptions, including one that led to Ryan Havens' 22-yard field with 2:14 left in the third quarter.

The only score for Kansas State came on a 41-yard field goal by Jeff Snodgrass with just over two minutes left in the first half.
