Missed extra point dooms Minnesota vs. Penn St in OT
Oct 7, 2006 - 8:36 PM MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Jason Giannini and Trumaine Banks will not look back fondly upon Minnesota's 2006 battle with Penn State.Giannini missed an extra point in overtime and Banks was whistled for interference on what could have been the final play as the Golden Gophers were edged by the Nittany Lions, 28-27, in a Big Ten Conference contest.
A wild contest saw Penn State take a 21-14 lead on a seven-yard pass by Anthony Morelli to Matt Hahn with 5 1/2 minutes to go in the fourth quarter. Minnesota tied it on a one-yard run by Amir Pinnix with 1:02 to go.
Minnesota (2-4, 0-3 Big Ten) got the ball first in overtime and took the lead on a 25-yard TD toss from Bryan Cupito to Eric Decker. But the edge remained just six points when Giannini's extra point hit the uprights.
The Gophers appeared to stop the Nittany Lions (4-2, 2-1) when Banks knocked down Morelli's 4th-and-9 pass to Deon Butler. But Banks was called for interference, giving Penn State a first down at the 13.
Three plays later, Tony Hunt scored on a two-yard run and Kevin Kelly converted the extra point to give the Nittany Lions the victory.
