Baylor hands Colorado 10th straight loss
Oct 8, 2006 - 1:19 AM BOULDER, Colorado (Ticker) -- Ryan Havens nailed a 22-yard field goal and freshman linebacker Joe Pawelek's interception sealed things as Baylor survived to post a 34-31 triple-overtime victory over Colorado in a Big 12 Conference matchup. It was the Buffaloes' school record-tying 10th straight defeat.
Shawn Bell completed 31-of-44 attempts for 272 yards and two touchdowns for the Bears (3-3, 2-0 Big 12 South), who snapped a 10-game road losing streak in conference openers.
With the score tied at 31-31 and facing a 4th-and-goal in the third session of overtime, Havens' 22-yard kick split the uprights for a three-point cushion.
After Baylor's defense allowed just four yards on the first two plays of Colorado's drive, Pawelek picked off Bernard Jackson's pass in the end zone, securing the Bears' second straight win after a two-game slide.
Jackson ran for 94 yards, but completed only 9-of-24 pass attempts with three interceptions for the Buffaloes (0-6, 0-2 North), who are one loss shy of their worst start in school history.
Colorado pulled even at 17-17 on a nine-yard TD run by Byron Ellis with 4:13 remaining in regulation.
Baylor took a 24-17 lead on a one-yard run by Paul Mosley to begin overtime before Colorado tied it on a 10-yard pass from Jackson to Riar Geer.
The Buffaloes opened a 31-24 lead on a 25-yard run by Hugh Charles in double overtime. The Bears sent it into a third extra session on a 10-yard pass from Bell to Trent Shelton.
