Charlotte announces name of football stadium

Nov 1, 2011 - 8:10 PM Charlotte, NC (Sports Network) - The Charlotte 49ers' under-construction football stadium finally has a name: McColl-Richardson Field.

The on-campus stadium is named in honor of former Bank of America CEO Hugh McColl and current Carolina Panthers president Jerry Richardson, who both provided financial support for the new program.

The 15,000-seat stadium is scheduled to be completed by August 2012, in time for the first recruiting class to begin practice. The 49ers will begin play as an FCS independent in 2013.

"For the many players who have yet to play for our team. For the many fans who have yet to cheer for our team. For the many coaches who have yet to call one play, and for our students and alums and the many people who have worked so hard to see this dream realized, thank you," 49ers coach Brad Lambert said.

McColl-Richardson Field will host the first game in program history on August 31, 2013, when the 49ers welcome Campbell to Charlotte.
