Arkansas runs past overmatched I-AA Southeast Missouri State
Oct 14, 2006 - 9:07 PM FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas (Ticker) - After having his way against Auburn, Darren McFadden hardly was challenged by a Division I-AA opponent.McFadden ran for 71 yards and two touchdowns on six carries in the first quarter and sat out the rest of the contest as No. 17 Arkansas crushed Southeast Missouri State, 63-7.
Michael Smith rushed for 116 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries and Felix Jones added 106 yards and a score on five attempts for Arkansas (5-1), which gained 381 yards on the ground and 530 overall.
"There's a sense of urgency to everything we do now because we know we have a chance to win something," Smith said. "With Darren and Felix, I know I won't get that many opportunities, so I'm just trying to show the coaches that I'm ready whenever they need me. I was pleased. I know I can contribute when I get a chance."
The Razorbacks had two runners surpass 100 yards in consecutive games for the first time in school history.
Last week, the unranked Razorbacks stunned then-No. 2 Auburn, 27-10, as McFadden ran for 145 yards and a touchdown. He hardly was challenged by the Redhawks in this one, scoring on runs of 52 and two yards in the first 11 minutes before getting the rest of the day off.
"Darren McFadden's opening run for a touchdown today helped set the tone of the game," Arkansas coach Houston Nutt said. "It settled everything down and gave us confidence. That is what we wanted to do. It let the air (out) of their tires and basically gave them no hope."
Keith Jackson scored on a 69-yard interception return and Jones - who also surpassed 100 yards last week - on an 85-yard scamper before Smith added TD runs of 10 and 11 yards for a 42-0 cushion at the half. Jackson's interception was the team's first of the season.
Mitch Mustain completed just 5-of-13 passes for 51 yards and a touchdown but nevertheless improved to 5-0 to extend his school record for wins by a true freshman starting quarterback. Backup Casey Dick went 8-of-9 for 98 yards and two TDs.
Kevin Ballatore went 8-for-28 for 108 yards and two interceptions for Southeast Missouri State (3-3), which was meeting the Razorbacks for the second time. Exactly 100 years ago, Arkansas posted a 12-0 victory in Little Rock.
The Redhawks were limited to 31 yards on 23 carries and just 144 yards overall.
"Casey Dick played well and was accurate," Nutt said. "He didn't have any back pain. We are glad to have both quarterbacks well. We aren't going to be afraid to put either of them in. Casey showed a lot more confidence today."
Nutt went 4-0 against the Redhawks while with Murray State.
"We expected the game to be like this," Redhawks coach Tony Samuel said. "Arkansas is a good team and we don't match up. Our plan was to come and use this as experience to get better for our next game."
