Newton leads South Carolina to seventh straight win over Vandy

Oct 22, 2006 - 2:51 AM NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Syvelle Newton threw two touchdown passes in the second quarter as South Carolina took control, paving the way for a 31-13 victory over Vanderbilt in a Southeastern Conference matchup.

Newton completed 11-of-18 attempts for 133 yards and Cory Boyd ran for 116 yards on 22 carries for the Gamecocks (5-2, 3-2 SEC East), who extended their winning streak against the Commodores (3-5, 1-4 East) to seven.

After Ryan Succop made a 55-yard field goal six seconds into the second period, drawing South Carolina even at 3-3, Newton fired a two-yard strike to Sidney Rice with 9:30 left in the half for a seven-point advantage. Four minutes later, Newton capped a four-play, 46-yard drive with a 23-yard TD toss to Kenny McKinley for a 17-3 lead.

Vanderbilt crept within 17-13, but Newton pushed the margin back to 11 with a seven-yard scamper with 6:02 remaining in the third.

Chris Nickson rushed for 82 yards on 14 carries and a TD, but went just 4-of-15 with two interceptions for the Commodores, who have lost all 14 contests to a Steve Spurrier-coached team.
