Missouri takes down Toledo

Sep 6, 2014 - 9:24 PM Toledo, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Maty Mauk threw five touchdown passes and rushed for another in the 24th-ranked Missouri Tigers' 49-24 victory over the Toledo Rockets on Saturday.

Mauk completed 21-of-32 passes for 325 yards and two interceptions for the Tigers (2-0), who beat FCS foe South Dakota State last weekend. He also carried the ball 12 times for 36 yards.

Russell Hansbrough rushed for 84 yards and a score on 18 carries for Missouri, which racked up 502 yards of total offense. Jimmie Hunt caught six passes for 71 yards and two touchdowns.

Missouri head coach Gary Pinkel coached Toledo from 1991-2000 before taking over at Missouri. He is the winningest coach at both schools.

"I'm glad this day is over with and we can move on," said Pinkel. "I have some great memories here as well as some tough ones. We had some great games here and that helped us build the program at Toledo. The people here at UT are great. People have always been good to me here and I was very committed to this program. I was very fortunate to be the head coach at UT for 10 years."

Phillip Ely connected on 17-of-34 passes for 204 yards and an interception for the Rockets (1-1), who opened the season with a win over New Hampshire. He left the game in the third quarter with a leg injury and did not return.

Kareem Hunt carried the ball 15 times for 148 yards and three scores in defeat.

"I give a lot of credit to Missouri, they have a very good football team," said Toledo head coach Matt Campbell. "I don't think we played to our capabilities. I wish we would have had a better performance for who we are. But that credit goes to Missouri and their execution today."

The Tigers started their second possession of the game from the Toledo 45-yard line. Jimmie Hunt's 18-yard catch led to Hansbrough's 16-yard TD run.

The Rockets tied things up on Kareem Hunt's 38-yard touchdown run with 4:05 left in the first quarter.

But Darius White hauled in a 45-yard pass on the first play of the ensuing Missouri possession. On the fifth play of the drive, White caught a 7-yard TD pass from Mauk.

Ely was intercepted by Aarion Penton early in the second stanza, and Mauk capitalized for the Tigers with a 1-yard TD run. Toledo had a field goal blocked on its next possession.

Jimmie Hunt's 13-yard touchdown catch made it 28-7 Missouri.

Each team scored 14 points in the third quarter. Jimmie Hunt caught a 12-yard TD pass in the fourth.
