No. 16 Oklahoma State escapes Kansas with narrow win

Oct 12, 2014 - 2:23 AM Lawrence, KS (SportsNetwork.com) - Tyreek Hill returned a kickoff 99 yards for the decisive touchdown in the fourth quarter as the 16th-ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys edged the Kansas Jayhawks 27-20 at Memorial Stadium.

The Jayhawks, looking to pull off the shocker in the second game under interim head coach Clint Bowen, scored 13 straight points in the second half and tied the game at 20-20 on Matthew Wyman's 35-yard field goal with 6:55 remaining.

Hill, though, sprinted down the left sideline on the ensuing kickoff to put Oklahoma State back in front.

Kansas got the ball back with 2:04 to play, but Josh Furman sealed the win by picking off Michael Cummings' pass near midfield.

"When Tyreek gets into the open field, it's very difficult to catch him," said Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy. "We have a long ways to go, but at least we're leaving here with a win."

Daxx Garman completed 17-of-31 passes for 161 yards, a touchdown and one interception for the Cowboys (5-1, 3-0 Big 12), who have won five straight since beginning the season with a neutral-site loss to top-ranked Florida State.

Cummings finished with 288 yards on 20-of-37 passing and had a rushing touchdown for Kansas (2-4, 0-3), which dropped its third game in a row.

"Proud of the effort that our kids came out and played with," Bowen said. "You know, 20-7 at the half, they could have possibly let that thing get away, but they fought and we made it a game."

The Cowboys, playing their first true road game this season, drew first blood as Ben Grogan nailed a field goal from a distance of 43 yards.

On Kansas' next possession, however, Cummings hit Nick Harwell for 51 yards before scoring on a short TD run.

It didn't take Oklahoma State long to regain the lead. On the fifth play of the next drive, Desmond Roland ran 33 yards for the touchdown, making it 10-7 with 3:48 remaining in the first quarter.

The Cowboys made three trips to the red zone in the second quarter and came away with 10 points.

Garman kept it on a bootleg to convert a 4th-and-1 from the Kansas 17, but Oklahoma State wound up settling for a Grogan 25-yard field goal.

The Jayhawks then turned the ball over on downs in Oklahoma State territory. Cummings completed a pass on 4th-and-9 from the 34, but Nigel King was tackled three yards short of the first down.

After Grogan missed from 33 yards, the Jayhawks went three-and-out and a 20- yard Trevor Pardula punt gave Oklahoma State the ball at the Kansas 30. The Cowboys were able to extend their lead inside the final minute of the first half as Jhajuan Seales made a leaping grab in the back right corner of the end zone for a 7-yard touchdown.

Garman committed a pair of turnovers in the third quarter. Kansas got a first down after Cassius Sendish's interception, but was forced to punt.

Wyman missed a 42-yard field goal attempt on the next Jayhawks' drive, but he made a 21-yarder after Tevin Shaw recovered a Garman fumble.

Cummings closed out the third quarter with a 30-yard strike to Jimmay Mundine, then hooked up with the tight end for a 23-yard gain to open the fourth quarter. After a short reception by Tre' Parmalee, Kansas pulled to within 20-17 on Corey Avery's 23-yard TD run.

Game Notes

The Cowboys have won five straight over the Jayhawks and 10 of the last 11 meetings overall. They have won six straight in Lawrence, not losing on the road in the series since 1994 ... Roland has scored at least one touchdown in each of his last seven games ... Kansas outgained Oklahoma State 379-275 and had a slim edge in first downs (18-15).
