Final
Trickett, WVU knock off No. 4 Baylor
Oct 18, 2014 - 11:50 PM Morgantown, WV (SportsNetwork.com) - Clint Trickett threw two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter to lift West Virginia over No. 4 Baylor, 41-27, on Saturday.Trickett completed 23-of-35 passes for 322 yards, three touchdowns and an interception for the Mountaineers (5-2, 3-1 Big 12), who have won three in a row. The senior quarterback has passed for more than 300 yards in a school- record eight straight games.
Kevin White caught eight passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns, including the go-ahead score with 11:36 to play. Mario Alford caught the other touchdown pass in the fourth quarter.
"There were a lot of guys who contributed to this win. Guys were ready to play," said West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen. "I can't say enough about how they went out there and played hard. I was obviously proud of how they finished to get a big win here at home."
Bryce Petty connected on 16-of-36 passes for 223 yards and two touchdowns for the Bears (6-1, 3-1), who entered the game ranked No. 1 in the country in both scoring (52.7 points) and total offense (622.5 yards) but managed just 318 yards of total offense on Saturday.
Antwan Goodley had nine catches for 132 yards and one touchdown and Corey Coleman caught five passes for 77 yards and a score for Baylor, which was penalized 18 times for a Big 12-record 215 yards.
"I've never been involved with anything like that. You could check the last however many games we've had, and I don't think we've ever had that many penalties in a game," Baylor coach Art Briles said, according to the team's website.
"I guess that's just the way it was seen today. It affected the flow of the game."
White's 12-yard TD catch broke a 27-27 tie. Andrew Buie's 42-yard catch-and- run set up White's one-handed grab in the end zone.
West Virginia tacked on an insurance touchdown after Baylor was forced to punt. This time around, Alford caught a 39-yard TD pass to make it 41-27 with 7:35 to go.
After each team punted, Baylor took over at midfield with 4:24 remaining. The Bears moved the ball to the WVU 10-yard line before Petty was sacked. Petty's fourth down pass fell incomplete.
The Mountaineers ran the final 2 1/2 minutes off the clock to pull off the upset.
West Virginia turned the ball over on the game's first possession. Trickett was sacked by Andrew Billings and lost the football at the WVU 7-yard line. The Bears capitalized with a Petty touchdown throw to Coleman.
The Mountaineers responded with a touchdown of their own. Wendell Smallwood moved the chains with a 23-yard catch on 3rd-and-14. Following a pass interference call on Baylor, Trickett and White hooked up for a 36-yard score.
Baylor kicker Chris Callahan made a pair of field goals around a Trickett interception.
A pair of pass interference penalties on the Bears led to another West Virginia touchdown. Buie's 1-yard TD run with 10:56 left in the first half made it 14-13 Mountaineers.
Goodley responded with a 63-yard TD catch to put Baylor back in front. West Virginia, however, took a 24-20 lead into the half following Dreamius Smith's 9-yard touchdown run and Josh Lambert's 54-yard field goal.
Lambert added a 24-yard field goal early in the third stanza. But Shock Linwood scored from one yard out later in the period to make it a 27-27 game.
Game Notes
West Virginia leads the all-time series by a 2-1 margin ... Linwood carried the ball 21 times for 69 yards ... Smallwood rushed for 66 yards on 20 carries ... The Mountaineers had 456 yards of total offense.
