With crucial stretch looming, Texas A&M focuses on Baylor

Oct 24, 2006 - 8:00 PM No. 22 Texas A&M (7-1) at Baylor (4-4), 7:05 pm EDT

WACO, Texas (Ticker) - As tempting as it may be, now is not the time for Texas A&M to look ahead.

With games against three ranked conference opponents ahead on the schedule, No. 22 Texas A&M first has to get past Baylor on Saturday in a Big 12 Conference matchup.

The Aggies (7-1, 3-1 Big 12 South) are in control of their own destiny as they try to win the South Division title and advance to the Big 12 Conference title game. A win over the Bears would set up a closing stretch with games against No. 19 Oklahoma, 20th-ranked Nebraska and the annual grudge match with No. 5 Texas.

Winning out will not be easy for Texas A&M, but not much has been this season. The Aggies needed a late goal-line stand in a four-point win over Army, beat Kansas by a field goal and are coming off a 34-33 overtime victory over Oklahoma State.

Stephen McGee forced overtime against the Cowboys on a touchdown pass with three seconds remaining and Danny Gorrer blocked Jason Ricks' extra point in the extra session to seal the victory.

Baylor (4-4, 3-1 South) trailed, 35-17, after three quarters last week against Kansas but mounted a huge comeback to post a 36-35 victory.

Shawn Bell hit Dominique Zeigler with a 10-yard touchdown pass with 1:08 left in the game to give Baylor the comeback win.

Texas A&M leads the series, 63-30-9, and has more wins against Baylor than any other opponent.
