BOWL SHORTAGE

OK, maybe there are too many bowls.

Losses by Kentucky, Minnesota, Illinois and others Saturday meant there will not be enough six-win teams with .500 records to fill a record 40 bowls.

At least two teams with a 5-7 record will be in the postseason, and maybe as many as five.

Indiana and Virginia Tech did get their sixth victories of the season Saturday, upping the total number of bowl-eligible teams to 75.

South Alabama, Kansas State and Georgia State could still get to six next week. But that's it.

TIDE ROLLS

Adam Griffith created another indelible Iron Bowl memory, this one for a flawless performance.

Griffith emerged as an Iron Bowl hero for the Tide two years after his last play attempt touched off the Tigers' winning Kick Six play. Griffith kicked five field goals to help propel the Crimson Tide to the SEC West title with a 29-13 victory over rival Auburn.

Derrick Henry, meanwhile, continued laboring as No. 2 Alabama's tireless leading man. He ran a school-record 46 times for 271 yards against Auburn, the third-most in a game for a `Bama back and the most against the Tigers.

The Heisman Trophy candidate produced his fourth 200-yard game of the season against an SEC defense. He helped put it away with 19 runs in the fourth quarter, then extended his school-record streak of games with a rushing touchdown to 17 in the final minute.

Henry broke Trent Richardson's single-season rushing mark and had carries on 14 consecutive plays at the end.

TROJANS RIDE

Cody Kessler blinked back tears after he ascended the stepladder and raised his sword to lead the Southern California band in his final act on the Coliseum turf.

Although the Trojans never imagined the path to the Pac-12 title game would include so many detours and setbacks, they're still grateful for the journey.

Particularly because the path led straight through UCLA.

Kessler threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score, and USC clinched the Pac-12 South title with a 40-21 victory over No. 22 UCLA in the 85th edition of their crosstown showdown.

After snapping its three-year skid in the annual city rivalry game, USC will face Stanford next Saturday in the Trojans' first trip to the Pac-12 championship game.
