Snelling's late score pushes Virginia past NC State

Oct 28, 2006 - 8:11 PM CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia (Ticker) -- Thanks to the late heroics of Jason Snelling, Virginia continued its home dominance against North Carolina State.

Snelling ran for a pair of touchdowns, including the go-ahead score with less than two minutes left, as Virginia posted a 14-7 Atlantic Coast Conference triumph over reeling North Carolina State.

It was the second straight victory for the Cavaliers (4-5, 3-2 ACC Coastal), who have won their last five home contests against the Wolfpack. NC State (3-5, 2-3 Atlantic) has not won here since 1994.

A bruising 232-pound senior, Snelling has run for 506 yards and five TDs over his last five games. He carried the load for the offensively challenged Cavaliers on Saturday, gaining 99 yards on 20 carries.

Jameel Sewell completed 12-of-22 passes for 131 yards and also ran for 22 yards for Virginia, which managed just 256 yards of total offense.

NC State forged a 7-7 tie with 4:48 remaining on Daniel Evans' eight-yard scoring strike to John Dunlap. But Virginia responded with a nine-play, 80-yard drive capped by Snelling's 17-yard TD run with 1:31 left.

The Cavaliers sealed the victory on the ensuing defensive series when safety Tony Franklin intercepted Evans at the Wolfpack 43 with 1:01 to play.

Evans went 21-of-35 for 220 yards for NC State, which has lost three straight.
