Texas says QB Heard has 'minor' shoulder sprain

Mar 31, 2016 - 4:09 PM AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Texas quarterback Jerrod Heard has a minor sprain of his throwing shoulder and there is no timetable for his return, the school announced Thursday.

Head Athletic Trainer Anthony Pass said Heard has started rehab for the injury.

Although not considered serious, the injury could be a setback for Heard, who is competing with senior Tyrone Swoopes and freshman Shane Buechele for the starting job in new coordinator Sterlin Gilbert's offense. Swoopes is considered to be running No. 1 in spring drills

Texas opens the 2016 season at home against Notre Dame.

Heard started 10 games in 2015, passing for 1,214 yards and five touchdowns, and rushing for 556 yards and three scores for the Longhorns, who finished 5-7.
