No surprise: UNC names Trubisky as starting QB for opener
Apr 22, 2016 - 5:18 PM CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) North Carolina coach Larry Fedora has named Mitch Trubisky as starting quarterback for the opener against Georgia.UNC announced the move Friday, with Fedora saying in a statement that Trubisky ''worked extremely hard and earned it.''
The redshirt junior was the clear front-runner and most experienced option to succeed Marquise Williams, though Fedora had spent spring practices saying no one had ''anointed'' Trubisky and he had to compete for the job.
Trubisky threw for six touchdowns and ran for three last year. He had also performed well in spot duty, including coming on after Williams was forced out for a play after losing his helmet to throw the winning touchdown at Virginia in 2014.
The Tar Heels and Bulldogs meet in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in Atlanta on Sept. 3.
