Career of Kansas RB Matthews is likely over
Aug 29, 2017 - 5:52 PM Kansas running back Octavius Matthews will miss the season and is likely to be done with football for good after tests revealed a career-ending medical condition.Jayhawks coach David Beaty said the team's top recruit and nation's No. 1-ranked JUCO running back would remain with the program. The nature of the medical issue was not disclosed.
Matthews was dubbed "one of the biggest victories we have in this class" by Beaty in February when KU learned the 6-foot-1 running back picked the Jayhawks over Tennessee and Purdue. Matthews initially committed to Auburn, a national power known for producing pro running back prospects.
Jayhawks junior quarterback Peyton Bender was a college teammate of Matthews in 2016 at Itawamba (Miss.) Community College and projected a versatile role for him at KU.
"Explosive player. Really fast. He's a versatile player, as well. He can move around and play different positions, not just play running back," Bender said in the offseason.
Matthews was held out of most August workouts awaiting results of medical tests.
No one has shouted yet.
