Texas A&M QB Starkel, S Wilson undergo surgery

Sep 5, 2017 - 6:26 PM Texas A&M quarterback Nick Starkel and senior free safety Donovan Wilson each underwent surgery and are expected to be sidelined for an extended period of time, coach Kevin Sumlin announced on his weekly radio show.

Starkel underwent surgery on a fractured ankle Monday morning and Wilson had a screw inserted into his injured left foot, Sumlin said.

"I don't know if those guys will be back or not (by the end of the season)," Sumlin said. "Those two guys are out for a long time. We'll see where they are at the end of the year."

Starkel completed his first three throws during an 11-play, 75-yard drive that ended with a touchdown in Texas A&M's 45-44 loss to UCLA on Sunday night. A redshirt freshman, Starkel completed 6 of 13 passes for 62 yards before exiting the game in the third quarter with the injury.

Mond struggled in relief of Starkel, completing just three of his 17 passes as the Aggies were in the midst of their second-half collapse.

Wilson collected six interceptions and three forced fumbles to go along with 17 tackles in his last two seasons.
