Texas looks to book spot in Big 12 title game at KSU
Nov 7, 2006 - 9:10 PM No. 4 Texas (9-1) at Kansas St (6-4), 8:00 pm ESTMANHATTAN, Kansas (Ticker) - Fourth-ranked Texas looks to secure a spot in the Big 12 Conference championship game for a second straight year when it visits Kansas State on Saturday.
Last year, the Longhorns - led by superstar junior Vince Young - reached their first conference title game since 2001, then manhandled Colorado, 70-3, before edging Southern California in the Rose Bowl to win their first national championship since 1970.
This year, Texas is led by a redshirt freshman, Colt McCoy, who plays with a poise beyond his experience. Last weekend, McCoy completed 23-of-29 passes for a season-high 346 yards and three touchdowns as the Longhorns (9-1, 6-0 Big 12 South) routed Oklahoma State, 36-10, to move within a win of a repeat division title.
McCoy's three TD passes gave him 27 for the season, breaking a school record shared by Young and Chris Simms. He needs three more to break the Division I-A freshman record set by Nevada's David Neill in 1998.
Texas also tied its school record of 21 straight league wins, set from 1968-71 in the Southwest Conference.
Kansas State has gone 6-4 - 3-3 in the Big 12 North - in its first year under Ron Prince to become bowl eligible for the first time since 2003.
The Wildcats are coming off a 34-21 triumph at lowly Colorado, their second straight win after consecutive defeats. Freshman Josh Freeman completed 22-of-26 passes for 251 yards and two TDs in the victory.
Texas has won the past two meetings since a 35-17 home loss in 1999. The teams have not played the last two years.
No one has shouted yet.
