Kelly on DC Elko: 'He's gonna be here at Notre Dame'

Dec 27, 2017 - 4:43 PM Notre Dame defensive coordinator Mike Elko will remain with the team, coach Brian Kelly told Irish Illustrated.

Elko is in the midst of his first season with 14th-ranked Notre Dame (9-3), which will play No. 17 LSU in the Citrus Bowl on New Year's Day.

He was rumored to have drawn interest from Jimbo Fisher at Texas A&M.

"Yeah, it's been a challenge, but we'll all be together," Kelly told Irish Illustrated of his assistants. "At first glance, yeah, I think you're always on guard (about losing a coach), especially the defensive coordinator position. Mike came in, did a really good job. His name was out there, but he's gonna be here at Notre Dame."

Under Elko's watch, the Fighting Irish didn't allow more than 20 points during any of the first eight games of the season. The defense permitted just nine rushing touchdowns all season, which ranks ninth nationally.
