The Sun Belt championship will be up for grabs in Lafayette, LA, on Saturday afternoon in what, at least on paper, should be one of the closest conference championship games anywhere in college football. For the home Ragin Cajuns’, head coach Billy Napier has already departed for the green pastures of Florida (but will coach Saturday), as the team will now have to re-focus for one of the biggest games in program history.

Overview 

The Fun Belt lived up to the billing this year, with Appalachian State leading the way, ranking inside the top 20 in the country in points scored at 35.8 per game. Led by an offensive attack that put up 440 yards per game, the Mountaineers have balanced the attack with a slight nod to a rush attack currently averaging 189 yards per game.

Their 11-1 performance and complete program turnaround were good enough for the Ragin Cajuns to see coach Napier get an offer he couldn’t refuse as he bolted for Florida earlier in the week. A big part of their success has come from their depth, as this year’s unit returned 20 starters and will surely want to send them off with a conference title on Saturday.

Bottom Line

For me, it says a lot about this team and Napier’s hold on it that he’s sticking around to finish the job despite being halfway out the door to Gainesville. So in this one,  I like for the Ragin’ Cajun seniors to rally behind this team’s success and Napier’s loyalness and send him south with the first Sun Belt victory in program history.
