Oregon Ducks vs Oklahoma Sooners Odds & Game Pick (2021)

Dec 27, 2021 - 6:56 PM

The Oregon Ducks will take on the Oklahoma Sooners in the Valero Alamo Bowl on Wednesday, December 29, on ESPN. These teams are going through coaching changes and will have interim head coaches on the sideline.

That should make an interesting bowl game. Oregon’s former head coach Mario Cristobal went to Miami, while Oklahoma’s former coach Lincoln Riley went to USC.

Anyway, Oregon went 10-3 on the season and likely peaked too highly in rankings throughout the season. Meanwhile, inconsistency forced Oklahoma to switch quarterbacks in the middle of the season.

Is Oklahoma too much for Oregon to handle? Here are our picks and predictions for the Oregon Ducks vs. Oklahoma Sooners on December 29, at 9:15 pm ET.

Overview

The Oregon Ducks wish that the Utah Utes never existed. Oregon went 10-3 with two losses to Utah, including one game in the Pac-12 Championship. It wasn’t that Utah was just the better team. It was that Utah found every single way to capitalize on Oregon’s weaknesses. Utah ultimately knew how to play Oregon well.

Oregon averaged 418 yards on the offensive end and gave up 370.7 yards per game on the defense. Despite scoring 31.4 points per game and allowing 25.5 points per game, Oregon had many weaknesses.

The Ducks allowed nearly 130 yards per game on the ground and were ultimately weak against the run. The Ducks were also pretty poor in the secondary, but a dominant pass rush mitigated the damage game-after-game.

On the other hand, Oklahoma finished the season 10-2 and played much more consistently than Oregon. Despite allowing 382 yards per game on the defense, the defense was also much better. The Sooners averaged 38.4 points per game while achieving over 440 yards on the offensive end.

Oklahoma should be able to win this game at the line of scrimmage. Ultimately, I’d trust Oklahoma quarterback Caleb Williams over Oregon’s Anthony Brown.

Trends

  • As a favorite, Sooners are 4-0 ATS in their last four neutral site games.
  • Over is 5-1 in Sooners’ last six vs. Pac-12.
  •  Over is 14-3 in Sooners last 17 games following a straight-up loss.

Bottom Line

The Oregon Ducks were overrated throughout the entire season. The Pac-12 just wasn’t elite this year, outside of Utah. That’s why Utah has crowned the Pac-12 champions at the end of the day.

There are plenty of ways to beat Oregon’s defense. The Ducks struggle against the run and aren’t that great in the secondary. If Williams can escape pressure early each snap, Oklahoma will have a field day offensively in this game.

Pick: Oklahoma -4.5 (-110)
