Virginia keeps alive bowl hopes with win over Miami

Nov 18, 2006 - 8:36 PM CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia (Ticker) -- Thanks to Jameel Sewell, Virginia still has hopes of going bowling.

Sewell ran for two touchdowns as Virginia kept alive its postseason hopes with a 17-7 Atlantic Coast Conference victory over Miami.

In order to qualify for a bowl for a fifth straight season, the Cavaliers (5-6, 4-3 ACC Coastal) will have to win at No. 19 Virginia Tech next weekend.

The reeling Hurricanes (5-6, 2-5 Coastal) lost their fourth straight game and will need a win at home next weekend against No. 20 Boston College in order to qualify for the postseason.

Miami played just four days after the funeral of defensive lineman Bryan Pata, who was fatally shot outside his apartment last week.

A redshirt freshman who was making just his second start, Sewell scored on a 12-yard run in the first quarter and two yards in the second, helping the Cavaliers to a 14-0 lead.

Sewell completed 23-of-33 passes for 217 yards.

Noah Greenbaum's 22-yard field goal early in the fourth extended the advantage to 17-0.

Kirby Freeman, who was making his second start in place of the injured Kyle Wright, threw a 77-yard touchdown pass to Lance Leggett with just over three minutes remaining for Miami.
