Lee, Carr help Florida State become bowl eligible

Nov 18, 2006 - 11:44 PM TALLAHASSEE, Florida (Ticker) -- Xavier Lee threw two touchdown passes to Greg Carr as Florida State became bowl eligible with an unimpressive 28-20 non-conference victory over Western Michigan.

Lee completed 9-of-13 passes for 144 yards and two TDs as Florida State (6-5) rebounded from last week's ugly 30-0 loss to Wake Forest and won for just the second time in its last five games.

The Seminoles will try to complete their disappointing regular season in thrilling fashion next week when they host archrival and third-ranked Florida.

Western Michigan (7-4) had its comeback attempt fall short on the final play when Ryan Cubit's heave into the end zone fell incomplete on a 4th-and-29 from the Florida State 30.

Lee and Carr hooked up for a 26-yard TD pass midway through the second quarter to give the Seminoles a 14-3 lead. The Broncos scored the next 10 points but Lawrence Timmons scored on a 22-yard interception return late in the third quarter to restore an eight-point cushion.

Lee made it 28-13 with 12:44 remaining in the contest when he found Carr for a 19-yard scoring strike.

Lorenzo Booker rushed for 80 yards on 21 carries and De'Cody Fagg, Lorenzo Booker and Chris Davis each caught three passes for the Seminoles, who won despite converting just 1-of-11 third downs.

Cubit completed 27-of-49 passes for 229 with two touchdowns and two interceptions for Western Michigan. His favorite target was Jamarko Simmons, who caught nine balls for 123 yards and a score.
