Glennon leads Virginia Tech to easy road win over Wake Forest
Nov 19, 2006 - 3:04 AM WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Sean Glennon and Virginia Tech put a damper on Wake Forest's dream season.Glennon threw a pair of touchdowns as the 19th-ranked Hokies posted a 27-6 Atlantic Coast Conference victory over the 14th-ranked Demon Deacons.
Glennon completed 14-of-21 passes for 252 yards for Virginia Tech (9-2, 5-2 ACC Coastal), which extended its winning streak to five games and ended Wake Forest's at four.
Though their ranking will take a hit, the game essentially was meaningless for the Demon Deacons (9-2, 5-2 Atlantic), who still can reach the ACC title game with a victory at No. 21 Maryland next week.
"I don't think they (were looking ahead)," Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe said of his players. "I'm disappointed we didn't play well tonight. I'm not taking anything away from Virginia Tech. I thought we did some good things, but we seemed to be always a yard or half a yard short of first down."
The Demon Deacons already have the most wins in any season in school history.
"We have confidence - it's not like this (loss) just shut our team down," Wake Forest quarterback Riley Skinner said. "We had a hard loss, and we are going to bounce back, so I don't think that it will affect our team because this season is a special season. "We need to continue on doing what we're doing and don't let one thing get in our way. We want to be in Jacksonville on December 2. If we sit here and just shrug our shoulders and hang our heads, there's no way we can be in Jacksonville on December 2."
Glennon opened the scoring with a 49-yard strike to Eddie Royal early in the first quarter and made it 14-3 with a 53-yard toss to Josh Morgan barely three minutes into the third.
"It feels good coming down here where everybody thought we were gonna lose," Morgan said. "Everybody was against us. We came out and put out everything we had. Everything was just clicking."
Wake Forest's Sam Swank and Virginia Tech's Brandon Pace traded field goals before the Hokies opened a 24-6 advantage on a 35-yard fumble return by linebacker Xavier Adibi with 3:01 left in the third period.
Rover Aaron Rouse had knocked the ball loose from Deacons running back Kevin Harris with a helmet-to-helmet hit, and when no whistle sounded with the ball lying on the field for several seconds, Adibi wisely picked it up and ran to the end zone for the Hokies' national-best 20th defensive touchdown since 2003.
"It felt good to hear the whole stands go quiet and then seal the game with that touchdown," Rouse said.
Skinner went 17-of-30 for 195 yards for the Demon Deacons, who were coming off a 30-0 triumph at Florida State - the Seminoles' first home shutout in 31 seasons under Bobby Bowden.
Neither team had success running the ball, with Virginia Tech gaining only 92 yards and Wake Forest just 62.
"I would say that our running game was done tonight," Skinner said. "They were playing in the gaps, and they saw how we weren't doing so well."
"The reason Riley faced so much pressure is because we couldn't run the football," Grobe said. "When the other team realizes that the only way you're going to move it is to throw it, they are in a good position."
Hokies star running back Branden Ore injured his left ankle in the first quarter and later was seen on crutches.
"I'm real proud of our football team," Hokies coach Frank Beamer said. "We had a setback in the beginning of the game with Brandon Ore. We got to fight through that."
The Hokies lead the series, 22-11-1. In the last meeting two years ago, Virginia Tech posted a 17-10 win here.
No one has shouted yet.
