Having wrapped up MWC title, BYU visits Utah

Nov 22, 2006 - 1:11 AM No. 21 BYU (9-2) at Utah (7-4), 3:30 pm EST

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) - BYU may have wrapped up its conference title and bowl bid, but the Cougars do not want to end their regular season on a down note against an intrastate rival.

The 21st-ranked Cougars aim for their first undefeated Mountain West Conference season since 2001 when they visit Utah on Saturday.

BYU (9-2, 7-0 MWC) clinched the outright league title with a 42-17 home rout of New Mexico last weekend, then accepted a bid to the Las Vegas Bowl for a second straight year.

John Beck completed 28-of-42 passes for a season-high 464 yards and four touchdowns in the romp. He joined 1990 Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer as the only quarterbacks in school history to throw for 10,000 yards.

Utah (7-4, 5-2), which is second in the MWC, has won three straight games, including a 17-14 triumph at Air Force last week.

Louie Sakoda gave the Utes the victory with a 37-yard field goal with no time left. Two-way player Eric Weddle ran for two touchdowns and made eight tackles in the win.

Utah has won the last four meetings and nine of the last 13.
