Montana, Montana State win in I-AA playoffs

Nov 26, 2006 - 5:03 AM BRISTOL, Connecticut (Ticker) - Josh Swogger and Jack Rolovich made the "Treasure State" proud.

Swogger and Rolovich guided Montana and Montana State, respectively, to victories Saturday in the first round of the Division I Football Championship - formerly Division I-AA - playoffs.

A transfer from Washington State, Swogger threw for 259 yards and four touchdowns as the second-ranked Grizzlies (11-1) rolled to a 31-6 triumph over McNeese State (7-5).

Rolovich threw for 272 yards and two TDs and ran for another score as the Bobcats (8-4) dismissed Furman (8-4), 31-13.

in the quarterfinals next week, Montana State will visit top-seeded Appalachian State (11-1), which rolled past Coastal Carolina (9-3), 45-28.

Montana will face Southern Illinois (9-3), a 36-30 home winner over Tennessee-Martin (10-3).

Also in the bottom half of the bracket, No. 3 Massachusetts downed Lafayette (6-6), 35-14, and New Hampshire (9-3) edged host Hampton (10-2), 41-38.

Illinois State (9-3) posted a 24-13 road win over Eastern Illinois (8-5) and next will play Youngstown State (10-2), a 35-31 winner over James Madison (9-3).
