Louisville hopes to beat UConn, have Rutgers lose Saturday

Nov 28, 2006 - 9:22 PM Connecticut (4-7) at No. 6 Louisville (10-1), 12:00 pm EST

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (Ticker) - Louisville first has to win Saturday. Then it has to watch.

Hoping to win the Big East Conference's BCS bowl bid, the sixth-ranked Cardinals host middling Connecticut.

Louisville (10-1, 5-1 Big East) is tied with No. 13 Rutgers atop the conference standings but fell to the Scarlet Knights on November 9, 28-25, and would lose the head-to-head tiebreaker were both teams to win Saturday.

However, things look promising for Louisville, as Connecticut has struggled this season and Rutgers must visit No. 15 West Virginia on Saturday night.

The Mountaineers also can win the league, but only by winning, having Louisville lose and finishing with a higher BCS mark than both the Cardinals and Scarlet Knights.

The Cardinals are coming off a 48-24 road rout of Pittsburgh in which Brian Brohm tossed four touchdowns. Louisville is 2-0 all-time against UConn, including a 30-20 road win last year.

The Huskies (4-7, 1-5) have lost back-to-back games and four of five, including a 26-23 setback to Cincinnati last week.

UConn took a 23-16 lead on a 45-yard TD pass from Matt Bonislawski to Brad Kanuch midway through the fourth quarter. But the Huskies missed the extra point and gave up a tying touchdown before the Bearcats kicked a winning field goal with 10 seconds left.
