Final
Navy makes it five in a row over Army
Dec 2, 2006 - 11:36 PM PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- Navy again sunk Army.Jason Tomlinson and Reggie Campbell each rushed for a touchdown to lead Navy to a 26-14 victory over Army in the 107th meeting of one of most storied rivalries in college sports.
Keenan Little also returned an interception for a touchdown in the fourth quarter for Navy (9-3), which matched its longest winning streak in the series, equaling a pair of five-game runs, most recently from 1959-63. Navy leads the series, 51-49-7.
The Navy senior class finished a combined 8-0 against Army and Air Force.
"I don't know if I really thought about it," Navy coach Paul Johnson said. "I'm just so happy for the guys on the team, especially the seniors."
Unlike the last four meetings, when the Midshipmen outscored the Black Knights (3-9) by a lopsided 178-54, this contest was actually much more competitive.
"I really did feel like we had a chance at winning until midway in the fourth quarter," Army coach Bobby Ross said.
Tomlinson's 33-yard touchdown run with 8:49 left in the third quarter gave the Midshipmen the lead for good at 14-7.
Matt Harmon added a 35-yard field goal with 7:07 left in the fourth before Little brought back an interception 40 yards for a score less than two minutes later to make it 24-7.
Campbell scored on a nine-yard run in the first quarter for Navy, which already has accepted a bid to the Meineke Car Care Bowl on December 30, where it will face an opponent from the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Navy will play its bowl game shorthanded after Adam Ballard, who leads the team with 792 rushing yards, broke his right leg in the first quarter.
As usual, the Midshipmen relied on their ground game, which produced 264 yards on 54 attempts. Kaipo-Noa Kakeaku-Enhada completed just 1-of-6 passes for 11 yards.
Jeremy Trimble scored on a 41-yard run in the first quarter and Tim Dunn caught a two-yard TD pass with two seconds left for the Black Knights, who ended their season on a six-game losing streak.
No one has shouted yet.
