Yates leads Texans to 5th straight victory
Nov 28, 2011 - 12:40 AM Jacksonville, FL (Sports Network) - Rookie T.J Yates came in for an injured Matt Leinart and led the Houston Texans to a 20-13 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars.Making his first start since 2009, Leinart completed 10-of-13 passes for 57 yards and a touchdown before leaving in the first half with a shoulder injury. Yates connected on 8-of-15 passes for 70 yards in relief.
Starter Matt Schaub was placed on injured reserve earlier this week due to a foot injury. Leinart could also be out for the season if a report on NFL.com is accurate and he has a broken collarbone.
Texans head coach Gary Kubiak said X-rays were inconclusive. Leinart will have more tests done when the team gets back to Houston.
Arian Foster carried the ball 22 times for 65 yards and a touchdown for the AFC South-leading Texans (8-3), who have won five in a row.
Andre Johnson, who missed the last six games with a hamstring injury, caught just two passes for 22 yards.
"We found a way to win and that's the most important thing," Kubiak said. "I think they will find a way to fight through anything."
Blaine Gabbert completed 13-of-29 passes for 136 yards and an interception for the Jaguars (3-8), who have lost two in a row. Luke McCown connected on 7- of-11 passes for 62 yards.
Maurice Jones-Drew carried the ball 18 times for 99 yards in defeat.
"Offensively, we just are struggling to generate enough productivity to have any fun," Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio said. "It's tough to win in this league when you're not scoring."
Jacksonville's defense came up with a surprising touchdown early on. Foster fumbled the football and Ashton Youboty sprinted 38 yards down the left sideline for Jacksonville's first defensive touchdown since October 5, 2008.
The Texans got on the board with 6:15 left in the first quarter. Foster's 43- yard run on third down put the ball inside the 20, and the running back capped the drive with a one-yard score.
The Jaguars almost had a touchdown early in the second period, but Marcedes Lewis dropped an easy touchdown pass on 2nd-and-goal from the three. The home team settle for a 21-yard Josh Scobee field goal with 10:41 left until half.
A 42-yard punt return from Jacoby Jones set up Houston at the 26, and Joel Dreessen caught a TD pass two plays later.
Johnathan Joseph then picked off Gabbert and returned the ball 29 yards to the Jacksonville 34, leading to a Neil Rackers 53-yard field goal for a 17-10 edge with 4:13 left.
After Scobee missed a 55-yard field goal, Yates led the Texans down the field. Rackers made a 33-yarder with two seconds remaining for a 20-10 lead at the half.
A scoreless third quarter featured six punts.
Gabbert was benched in the fourth period and McCown took over. An eight-play, 50-yard drive ended on a Scobee 35-yard field goal with 4:15 to play.
Jacksonville got the ball back with 3:04 remaining but a big sack on McCown resulted in a 13-yard loss, setting up a 3rd-and-27. Lewis got all but two of the yards back with a huge catch, but McCown's next throw fell incomplete.
