Suisham, Batch lead Steelers past Ravens

Dec 3, 2012 - 4:04 AM Baltimore, MD (Sports Network) - Shaun Suisham buried a 42-yard field goal as time expired and the Pittsburgh Steelers exacted a bit of revenge against the Baltimore Ravens with a 23-20 triumph Sunday at M&T Bank Stadium.

The Ravens defeated the Steelers, 13-10, in Pittsburgh just two weeks ago, but third-string quarterback Charlie Batch -- making his second straight start in place of Ben Roethlisberger and Byron Leftwich -- was able to chew up the final 6:14 of game clock with a 12-play, 61-yard march that culminated in Suisham's game-winning kick.

Batch finished 25-of-36 passing for 276 yards and a touchdown with one interception. Jonathan Dwyer carried the ball 16 times for 49 yards and a score for Pittsburgh (6-6), which bounced back from an eight-turnover performance in a 20-14 loss to Cleveland last weekend.

"I don't worry about last week. Last week is what it was," Tomlin remarked. "Would've, should've, could've is not in our business. (Batch) did the job tonight along with his comrades and that is what is important as I stand here."

Baltimore quarterback Joe Flacco completed 16-of-34 passes for 188 yards and a touchdown with one interception, while Ray Rice rushed for 78 yards and a score on 12 carries for the Ravens (9-3), who had won 16 consecutive home games since a 13-10 setback to Pittsburgh on Dec. 5, 2010.

"This game is not going to make or break our season," Rice said of missing out on a chance to clinch the AFC North. "Give credit where credit is due. They made the plays we've been making over the last few times. They were the last team to beat us here. I guess they're on their playoff run right now."

Baltimore held possession and a 20-13 lead with just under 10 minutes left in the game, but on 3rd-and-5 from the Baltimore 32, Pittsburgh linebacker James Harrison came off the edge and stripped Flacco from behind.

Ziggy Hood pounced on the loose ball at the Baltimore 27 and four plays later, Batch rolled right and found Heath Miller, who stretched the ball just inside the pylon for a 7-yard touchdown to knot the game at 20-20 with 7:24 left.

The Ravens picked up a first down on the first play of their ensuing touch, but three straight incompletions forced the home team to punt the ball away.

Batch then led his squad on the game-winning scoring drive, as back-to-back completions to Antonio Brown moved the ball near midfield.

A Baltimore penalty then moved the Steelers into field-goal range, as Paul Kruger was whistled for roughing the passer at the tail end of Mike Wallace's 10-yard catch.

With the Ravens out of timeouts, Pittsburgh then ran the ball three straight times before calling a timeout with three seconds left to set up Suisham's game-winner.

Suisham's 46-yard field goal got the Steelers on the board on their opening touch of the contest, but the Ravens answered early in the second with a 45- yard field goal from Justin Tucker.

After a three-and-out from the Steelers, a 30-yard defensive pass interference penalty moved the Ravens to the Pittsburgh 10. Baltimore couldn't punch it in from the 4-yard line, however, and settled for a 23-yard field goal from Tucker to grab a 6-3 lead with 9:34 left until halftime.

Baltimore then took advantage of a Pittsburgh turnover to extend its lead, as Brown took a reverse and tried to throw it deep for Dwyer, but Corey Graham picked it off at the Baltimore 31.

A defensive holding penalty on 3rd-and-5 kept the Ravens' ensuing touch alive, and two plays later, Flacco found Anquan Boldin down the left sideline for a 28-yard touchdown to press the margin to 13-3 late in the first half.

Pittsburgh cut into the lead on Suisham's 41-yarder late in the half, then pulled even on the opening possession of the third quarter.

After Isaac Redman kept the march moving with an 8-yard surge on 3rd-and-3, Batch found Miller deep down the middle of the field for 43 yards to the Baltimore 19.

Two plays later, Dwyer carried it up the middle and looked to be stuffed at the line, but he bounced it to the outside and got a block from Batch for a 16-yard touchdown run to knot the game at 13-13 less than four minutes into the second half.

After a Baltimore punt, Pittsburgh looked poised to pull ahead on its next drive, as Batch found Emmanuel Sanders wide-open near midfield.

Sanders had plenty of room to run, but as he went to transfer the ball to his other arm, he lost control of it. Baltimore safety Ed Reed pounced on the loose ball at the Baltimore 37 and the Ravens quickly took advantage.

A 19-yard catch by Dennis Pitta on 3rd-and-11 kept Baltimore's ensuing possession alive before Rice capped the series with a 34-yard TD surge to give the Ravens a 20-13 lead with 4:50 left in the third.
