Chiefs beat Cardinals in preseason action
Aug 11, 2012 - 3:40 AM Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Matt Cassel and the Chiefs' first-team offense came out strong and Kansas City held on for a 27-17 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in preseason action.Over two series, Cassel completed 5-of-6 passes for 67 yards and a touchdown in his first game playing under new offensive coordinator Brian Daboll.
Jamaal Charles carried the ball three times for 12 yards in his first game since he tore his ACL last September and Peyton Hillis ran for 41 yards on four rushes, including a 28-yard scamper, in his first game in a Chiefs uniform.
John Skelton and Kevin Kolb both struggled in the Cardinals' second preseason game. Skelton started the game and completed 3-of-6 six pass attempts for 35 yards and an interception.
Kolb, who left Sunday's Hall of Fame Game with bruised ribs after completing only 1-of-4 passes with an interception, connected on 1-of-5 passes for 21 yards. He has a 0.0 quarterback rating so far in the preseason.
Cassel and Kansas City architected a 12-play drive, including a fourth-down conversion, to score on their opening drive. The Chiefs scored on an 11-yard completion from Cassel to Hillis.
After Arizona punted on its first possession, the Chiefs went back to work. Cassel completed a pair of passes for 40 yards and Hillis broke off a 28-yard run before Shaun Draughn finished the drive with a four-yard run to put Kansas City ahead, 14-0.
The Chiefs took advantage of Skelton's pick to extend their lead to 17 early in the second quarter.
Ryan Lindley drove the Cardinals into field goal range just before half and Jay Feely connected from 40-yards out to cut the deficit to 14 going into the half.
On the opening drive of the second half, William Powell, who ran for 92 yards on the night, exploded for a 67-yard run and later scored to bring Arizona within seven.
Arizona was unable to get any closer. Kansas City took advantage of a 34-yard punt return by Devon Wylie to set up a short field goal.
Kansas City recovered a fumble late in the third quarter in Cardinals' territory before Cyrus Gray scored early in the fourth quarter to open up a 27-10 lead.
Richard Bartel, who completed 5-of-6 passes for 69 yards, threw an 18-yard touchdown to Jaymar Johnson to round out the scoring.
