Redskins thrash Bucs
Aug 30, 2013 - 4:35 AM Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - Pat White completed 13-of-22 passes for 181 yards and also ran for 22 yards and a touchdown as the Washington Redskins downed the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 30-12, in the final preseason game for both teams.Evan Royster carried the ball 11 times for 59 yards and a touchdown and Dezmon Brisco caught two passes for 75 yards for the Redskins, who will open the season against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 9.
Washington finished the preseason 4-0.
Also on Thursday, the Redskins announced 2012 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year has been cleared to play in the team's opener. Redskins coach Mike Shanahan announced after the game that Griffin officially was cleared by Dr. James Andrews after an examination.
Griffin, of course, underwent surgery in January to repair both the lateral collateral and anterior cruciate ligaments in his right knee. He suffered the LCL injury in a Week 14 win over Baltimore and missed one game, then was hurt again during Washington's wild card playoff loss to Seattle.
Rookie Mike Glennon was 7-for-16 passing for 63 yards and an interception and Peyton Hillis rushed for 33 yards on nine carries for the Buccaneers, who will visit the New York Jets to open the season on Sept. 8.
Tampa Bay finished the preseason 1-3.
Washington marched right down the field on the game's opening possession. White connected with Briscoe for a 66-yard reception and two plays later Royster bulled his way into the end zone from one yard out.
Kai Forbath split the uprights from 37 yards out with 1:09 remaining in the first quarter.
Chris Thompson returned Chas Henry's punt 69 yards for a TD in the closing seconds of the first quarter to make it 17-0.
Najee Goode picked off White, his former West Virginia teammate, and returned it 37 yards for a touchdown, but Derek Dimke missed the extra point attempt and Tampa Bay trailed 17-6 early in the second quarter.
Forbath's 30-yarder with just under 5 1/2 minutes left made it 20-6.
After Glennon was picked off the ensuing possession, White scrambled his way into the end zone from seven yards out to give the Redskins a commanding 27-6 lead.
Dimke's 30-yard field goal on the opening drive of the second half made it 27-9, but Forbath split the uprights from 47 yards out with just over a minute left in the third to make it a 21-point game.
Rian Lindell's 50-yarder in the fourth accounted for the final difference.
