Pats top Eagles in high-scoring affair
Aug 16, 2014 - 3:29 AM Foxboro, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Tom Brady was 8-of-10 for 81 yards with a touchdown and an interception as the New England Patriots defeated the Philadelphia Eagles, 42-35, in preseason action on Friday night.Second-round draft choice Jimmy Garoppolo completed 6-of-12 passes for 72 yards and a pair of scores, while Kenbrell Thompkins caught three passes for 32 yards and a touchdown for the hosts.
Nick Foles bounced back from last week's two-interception performance against Chicago by going 8-of-10 for 81 yards and a touchdown. His backup, Mark Sanchez, went 11-of-12 for 117 yards with two touchdowns and an interception for the Eagles.
Second-round selection Jordan Matthews tallied nine receptions for 104 yards and LeSean McCoy carried the ball six times for 19 yards in defeat.
Cary Williams returned a Brady interception 77 yards for a touchdown to open the scoring in the first, but Brady bounced back and hit Thompkins with a 15- yard TD pass on New England's ensuing possession before Garoppolo found James Develin in the flat for a 15-yard score to give the Pats a 14-7 lead after a quarter of play.
Garoppolo's second TD toss, a four-yarder in the back of the end zone to Brandon LaFell, increased the margin to 21-7 early in the second.
The Eagles posted the final two touchdown drives of the half to tie the game at 21-21. Foles fired a 6-yard TD pass to Zach Ertz and Arrelious Benn hauled in a 6-yard TD catch from Sanchez after the ball popped up in the air while Ifeanyi Momah attempted a diving grab.
New England sandwiched TD runs of six yards by Ryan Mallett and 10 yards by Roy Finch around a Damaris Johnson 5-yard TD reception midway through the third. Brian Tyms added a 17-yard TD catch later in the frame to give the Pats a 42-28 cushion. Henry Josey hauled in a 27-yard reception for a score on the final play of the quarter to get the Eagles within 42-35.
Johnson was stopped on 4th-and-goal from the 1-yard line with less than five minutes remaining in the fourth.
