Panthers top Chiefs in Newton's return

Aug 18, 2014 - 4:09 AM Charlotte, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Cam Newton was 4-of-9 for 65 yards in his preseason opener as the Carolina Panthers beat the Kansas City Chiefs, 28-16, on Sunday night.

Newton had left ankle surgery in March and was held out of his team's first exhibition game against Buffalo last week.

Jonathan Stewart carried the ball four times for 26 yards and two touchdowns, while second-round rookie Kelvin Benjamin caught two passes for 41 yards for the Panthers.

Alex Smith completed 14-of-22 passes for 127 yards for Kansas City. Dwayne Bowe had five receptions for 62 yards and Travis Kelce hauled in four passes for 63 yards and a score.

Ryan Succop nailed a 54-yard field goal for the lone points of the first quarter and Cairo Santos' 44-yarder in the second gave KC a 6-0 lead before Stewart rushed in for scores of two and three yards, respectively, to give Carolina a 14-6 advantage going into the break.

A 25-yard Succop field goal and Kelce's 43-yard TD catch staked the Chiefs to a 16-14 third-quarter edge, but the Panthers posted two more touchdowns to close the frame.

Brenton Bersin caught a 16-yard TD pass from Derek Anderson and Fozzy Whittaker plunged in from a yard out for a 28-16 Carolina advantage.
