Marinelli's son-in-law named Lions defensive coordinator

Jan 3, 2007 - 5:32 PM ALLEN PARK, Michigan (Ticker) - The Detroit Lions named Joe Barry, the son-in-law of coach Rod Marinelli, as their defensive coordinator on Wednesday.

The hiring of Barry comes one day after the Lions fired defensive coordinator Donnie Henderson.

Barry spent the last six years as linebackers coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Marinelli had been the defensive line coach of the Buccaneers for 10 years before becoming Lions coach last January.

Detroit (3-13) finished with the NFC's worst record this past season and is a league-worst 24-72 since 2001, when Matt Millen was named team president.

Chuck Priefer resigned as Lions special teams coach on Monday after serving in that position for 10 years and Henderson was let go after just one season.

The Lions allowed 24.9 points per game and ranked 28th in defense. Only San Francisco and Tennessee yielded more points than Detroit.
