Cowboys agree to terms with P McBriar on five-year deal

Feb 28, 2007 - 11:41 PM IRVING, Texas (Ticker) -- The Dallas Cowboys on Wednesday reached agreement with Pro Bowl punter Mat McBriar on a five-year contract.

Terms were not disclosed, but the deal is reportedly worth $8.5 million, including a $2.5 million signing bonus.

McBriar was eligible to become a restricted free agent on Friday.

But the Cowboys moved quickly to lock up the franchise's first Pro Bowl punter since 1971, when Ron Widby was selected.

A native of Australia, McBriar led the NFL with a 48.2-yard punting average with a 38.6 net in 2006. He placed 22 kicks inside the 20-yard line.

McBriar, 27, has been Dallas' punter since 2004 after being cut by Seattle.
