Janikowski boots Raiders over Chiefs in OT thriller

Nov 8, 2010 - 4:37 AM Oakland, CA (Sports Network) - Sebastian Janikowski hit a 33-yard field goal less than three minutes into overtime as the Oakland Raiders took a 23-20 win over the Kansas City Chiefs in an AFC West battle.

Kansas City started with the ball in the extra session but were held to a three-and-out.

On the first play after getting the ball back, Jason Campbell hit Jacoby Ford on a 47-yard diving catch and, after a run to get the ball lined up, Janikowski calmly split the uprights for the win.

Campbell went 19-for-33 with 229 yards, one touchdown and one interception while Ford finished the game with six catches for 148 yards and returned the opening kickoff of the second half 94 yards for a score for the Raiders (5-4), who go into their bye week with three straight wins, the first three-game winning streak for the club since 2002.

"We knew since we came out of camp what type of team we can be," said Ford. "I think we're going out there now and proving to everybody that the Raiders are for real."

Darren McFadden had 17 carries for 89 yards and added four catches for 25 yards for Oakland, which has now matched its largest win total in a season since winning 11 games in 2002. Oakland had won five games three times in the seven seasons since 2002.

"It was really an ugly game in a lot of ways," said Oakland head coach Tom Cable. "We weren't very good offensively for a while and never really got into a rhythm. But our defense kept us in the game long enough for us to come back and pull out the victory."

Matt Cassel was 20-for-35 with 216 yards, two scores and an interception while Dwayne Bowe and Verran Tucker each caught a score for the Chiefs (5-3), who were coming off an overtime win of Buffalo and had a two-game winning streak snapped.

"We just couldn't make that play to win it," said Kansas City head coach Todd Haley. "But we fought back and held their composure. They kept fighting and playing together. They played their hearts out, but we came up short."

Kansas City came into the game having won seven straight games in Oakland.

Trailing by four points after Janikowski's field goal made it a 17-13 game, Kansas City was held and had to punt, but Nick Miller muffed the catch and Kansas City came up with the ball at the Oakland 30.

Facing a 3rd-and-11 at the 20, Cassel zipped a pass into the back of the end zone that saw Bowe come down with the ball to give the Chiefs a 20-17 lead with 6:13 to play.

Oakland managed just one first down on its next touch before punting the ball away and Kansas City did the same before giving the ball back to Oakland at its own 25 with 2:06 to play.

On 3rd-and-11, Campbell hit Johnnie Lee Higgins for 12 yards to advance the chains and a defensive holding on another third down gave Oakland a fresh set of downs. Facing a 1st-and-20, Campbell threw a pass through the middle that saw Ford rip the ball out of the defenders hands for a 29-yard gain. After a spike killed the clock, Janikowski calmly booted a 41-yard field goal to send the game to overtime.

Late in the first quarter, Oakland held the ball near midfield and lined up for a punt on 4th-and-5. However, the team opted for the fake as the direct snap went to Rock Cartwright, who was stopped after two yards to give the Chiefs excellent field position.

A 30-yard interference call on Chris Johnson on 2nd-and-7 got the Chiefs into scoring position and a five-yard catch by Tony Moeaki, which was initially called a touchdown but overturned upon a review, made it 1st-and-goal at the one. The next play saw a holding call push Kansas City back 10 yards, but Cassel then lofted a pass into the left corner of the end zone where Tucker came down with the ball.

That play was also reviewed to determine if Tucker had possession when he hit the ground, but the call on the field stood and the Chiefs had a 7-0 lead early in the second.

McFadden fumbled on a rush on the next drive and Wallace Gilberry recovered at the Oakland 26.

The Chiefs were unable to get a first down, but Ryan Succop booted a 43-yard field goal to give the Chiefs a 10-0 lead with 11:08 left in the half.

After an exchange of punts, Oakland again punted the ball and Kansas City got a 72-yard return into the end zone by Javier Arenas, but it was nullified by an illegal block penalty.

The Chiefs went on to eat up the next four minutes and got a 41-yard field goal from Succop, but a holding call moved the ball back 10 yards and the team opted to punt.

Campbell was picked off by Jon McGraw on the first play, but Cassel was intercepted in the end zone by Jeremy Ware and Oakland killed off the rest of the clock.

Coming out of the locker room, Ford took the kickoff 94 yards to paydirt to cut Oakland's deficit to 10-7.

Kansas City dodged a bullet as a fumble on the ensuing kickoff gave Oakland excellent field position, but Janikowski missed a 47-yard field goal to the right.

The Chiefs then padded their lead with an eight-play drive that covered 56 yards and saw Succop make it a 13-7 game with a 25-yard field goal with 9:41 left in the third.

Oakland, though, answered on its next touch as a seven-play drive that covered 74 yards was capped on a two-yard pass by Campbell to Khalif Barnes for a 14-13 lead with 6:13 left in the third. The big play of the drive was a 34- yard run by McFadden that got the ball deep into Kansas City territory.

The score remained that way until the Raiders put together a 12-play drive that went for 75 yards and ate up close to five minutes which Janikowski finished with a 23-yard boot between the uprights for a 17-13 lead with 9:46 to play.

Game Notes

Tucker's touchdown catch in the first quarter was the first reception of his career...The Chiefs play at Denver next Sunday...The teams combined for 27 penalties in the game, which is the most in a game in the NFL this season...Jamaal Charles led the KC rushing attack with 10 carries for 53 yards. He also had five catches for 47 yards...Oakland will play in Pittsburgh following its week off...The Raiders have won four straight against the AFC West.
