San Diego Chargers draft needs

Apr 19, 2007 - 4:14 PM Coach: Norv Turner (1st year) General manager: A.J. Smith

Last season: 14-2, AFC West champion

Major offseason additions: None.

Major offseason losses: LB Donnie Edwards, WR Keenan McCardell, S Terrence Kiel.

1st round pick: 30 2nd round pick: 62

Draft strategy: General manager A.J. Smith will likely take a wide receiver or a safety in the first round.

Released 37-year-old receiver Keenan McCardell, leaving Eric Parker and Vincent Jackson as the starters and Malcolm Floyd as the third receiver. Dwayne Bowe of Louisiana State, Dwayne Jarrett of Southern California and Sidney Rice of South Carolina are possibilities with the 30th pick.

Desperately need a playmaker at safety. Terrence Kiel, last year's starter at strong safety, was released by the team after being arrested. May draft Miami safety Brandon Meriweather or Texas safety Michael Griffin in the first round or Utah safety Eric Weddle in the second round.

Can use another inside linebacker in the 3-4 scheme after losing Donnie Edwards, who signed with Kansas City.

Re-signed left guard Kris Dielman, leaving LaDainian Tomlinson's offensive line intact.

May trade backup running back Michael Turner, who is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2007 season. If they do, Smith will likely draft a running back in the second round or with one of his two third-round picks.
