Miami Dolphins draft needs

Last season: 6-10, Last place AFC East

Major offseason additions: LB Joey Porter, TE David Martin, G Chris Liwienski, K Jay Feely.

Major offseason losses: DE Kevin Carter, David Bowens, QB Joey Harrington, TE Randy McMichael, WR-PR Wes Welker, T Damion McIntosh, G Jeno James, G Seth McKinney, G Kendyl Jacox, FB Darian Barnes, K Olindo Mare.

1st round pick: 9 2nd round picks: 40, 60

Draft strategy: No rookie started for the Dolphins last year when Nick Saban was running the draft. Now Saban is in Alabama and Randy Mueller and Cam Cameron are in charge.

Options with the ninth overall pick will probably come down to quarterback Brady Quinn of Notre Dame, safety LaRon Landry of Louisiana State, defensive end Jamaal Anderson of Arkansas and Paul Posluszny of Penn State.

Quarterback Daunte Culpepper played in just four games last year after coming off surgery for a torn ACL and MCL and the Dolphins cut Joey Harrington. They may not pass on a chance to take Quinn.

Used a first-round pick on Tennessee safety Jason Allen last year, but he was bothered by a hip condition. Mueller may not pass on Landry if he's available with the ninth pick.

Lost defensive ends Kevin Carter and David Bowens, leaving Miami with just Matt Roth to complement Jason Taylor, the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year. That makes Anderson a reasonable pick.

Posluszny will provide an upgrade at strongside linebacker over Donnie Spragan.

Have two second-round picks, the second coming from New England for Wes Welker.

Need reinforcements on the offensive line after releasing guards Jeno James, Seth McKinney and Kendyl Jacox. Signed Chris Liwienski, but will likely still use a second-round pick on a guard or tackle.
