Colts acquire DT McFarland, Bucs sign CB Buchanon

Oct 17, 2006 - 10:21 PM TAMPA, Florida (Ticker) - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers continued their tradition of making a deal just before the trade deadline.

Minutes before Tuesday's 4 p.m. EDT deadline, the Indianapolis Colts acquired defensive tackle Anthony McFarland from the Buccaneers for a second-round pick in 2007.

Last year, the Bucs acquired quarterback Tim Rattay from San Francisco for a sixth-round pick just before the deadline. In 2004, Tampa Bay traded wide receiver Keenan McCardell to San Diego for two draft picks on the day of the deadline.

This time, Colts coach Tony Dungy went to his former team for help and was able to swing a deal for McFarland, who was a first-round pick in 1999 when Dungy coached the Buccaneers.

Indianapolis desperately needed a run-stuffing tackle with Corey Simon out for the rest of the season. The Colts rank last in the NFL in run defense, yielding 166.8 yards per game.

McFarland, 28, had 13 tackles in five games with the Buccaneers this season. In 2005, he had 41 tackles, two sacks and two fumble recoveries.

Dungy likes to use a rotation of players at the defensive tackle positions. Montae Reagor and undersized Raheem Brock have started the first five games of the season with second-year player Darrell Reid forced into the role of rotation tackle.

The Buccaneers will likely move Ellis Wyms into McFarland's tackle spot alongside Chris Hovan.

The 6-foot, 300-pound McFarland missed eight games due to a triceps injury in 2004 and nine games, including playoffs, in 2002 due to foot and forearm injuries.

McFarland has started 84 of 98 games and compiled 305 tackles, 20 sacks, three forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and an interception.

After trading McFarland, the Bucs signed cornerback Phillip Buchanon, who had been released by the Houston Texans on Monday.

Tampa Bay starting cornerback Brian Kelly is expected to miss this weekend's game against Philadelphia with turf toe, giving the Bucs a need for an extra defensive back.

Buchanon, 26, was acquired by the Texans from the Oakland Raiders prior to the 2005 draft. But he had just two tackles in four games this season after being limited to six games last year due to injuries.

A first-round pick of the Oakland Raiders in 2002, Buchanon has registered 161 tackles and 11 interceptions in 50 career games.
