Bucs build big lead, beat Bills

Aug 24, 2014 - 12:18 AM Orchard Park, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers built a big halftime lead behind touchdowns from Doug Martin and Mike Evans and held on to beat the Buffalo Bills 27-14 on Saturday

Josh McCown passed for 112 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the first half as the Buccaneers got their first win in three preseason games.

Evans had three catches for 44 yards and a touchdown one day after a video surfaced showing the wide receiver in a brawl outside a Miami-area nightclub.

Evans' agent told the Tampa Bay Times the altercation took place in March -- before he was drafted No. 7 in May -- and not last weekend as TMZ reported. No one was arrested over the fight, agent Deryk Gilmore said.

Martin had 12 carries for 38 yards and Mike Glennon completed five of his seven passes for 44 yards in the second half. Connor Barth and Patrick Murray kicked field goals in the win.

EJ Manuel played three quarters for the Bills and passed for 198 yards and a touchdown but also turned the ball over twice on a fumble and an interception.

Buffalo played without rookie wide receiver Sammy Watkins (ribs) and lost for the third time in four preseason games.

C.J. Spiller rushed for 36 yards and Fred Jackson and Mike Williams scored touchdowns in the loss.

Manuel was intercepted on the first Bills drive and Spiller fumbled on the second, leading to Martin's 1-yard touchdown for a 7-0 Buccaneers lead after a 21-yard touchdown catch by Martin was overturned because he was short of the goal line.

Manuel's fumble in the second quarter was returned 17 yards for a touchdown by Bucs tackle Clinton McDonald and Evan's caught a 24-yard touchdown pass from McCown with 1:05 remaining to give Tampa Bay a 24-0 lead at halftime.

The Bills scored on consecutive possessions in the third quarter. Manuel and Williams connected on a 14-yard touchdown pass to cap an 85-yard drive and Jackson rushed for an 8-yard score to get them within 24-14.

Both teams end the preseason on Thursday, the Bucs against the Redskins and the Bills against the Lions.
