Eagles trade OL Barbre to Broncos, release DE Smith

Jul 26, 2017 - 10:21 PM The Philadelphia Eagles had planned to release Allen Barbre, but after announcing they had waived the veteran offensive lineman, the Eagles instead were able to trade him to the Denver Broncos for a 2019 conditional draft pick.

The Eagles did not get much in return for Barbre, but they still got something for a player they planned to waive anyway.

Shortly after announcing the departure of Barbre, the Eagles announced they released defensive end Marcus Smith, the team's first-round pick in 2014, and also signed linebacker Steven Daniels.

The original announcement that Barbre had been released came one day before the first full-team training camp practice. It also came hours after offensive coordinator Frank Reich said second-year player Isaac Seumalo would enter training camp as the starting left guard.

"Isaac's the starter and then there's just competition from there," Reich told reporters. "That's the great thing about training camp, the great thing about this business, it's just so stinking competitive. It's what the guys love about it. It's what we love about it, so again it'll play itself out."

Barbre, 33, started 12 games last season for Philadelphia, playing left guard and some right tackle. He missed part of the spring with a calf injury.

Barbre has been with the Eagles since 2013 and started 29 games. He started all 28 games he played the past two seasons.

By trading Barbre, the Eagles save $2.1 million against the salary cap while taking a $150,000 cap hit.

"Allen Barbre is a pro's pro," Howie Roseman, the Eagles' executive vice president of football operations, said in a statement. "Not only did he help the team with his solid play as a starter at left guard, but his ability to step up and play multiple positions helped us battle through some difficult situations."

The Broncos wanted to add depth to their offensive line. There is no guarantee that Barbre will make Denver's roster, but if he does and contributes, Philadelphia will get something for him.

Smith was drafted to play outside linebacker in the 3-4 front and made the transition to 4-3 defensive end in 2016. He played in 37 games in his three seasons with the team and recorded just four sacks.

This offseason, the Eagles signed veteran defensive end Chris Long in free agency and used the 14th overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft to take another defensive end in Derek Barnett.

Daniels was with the team briefly in the spring after claiming him off waivers from the Washington Redskins in May. Daniels landed on injured reserve as a rookie with a torn labrum.
